In 1999, the Design Trust and the New York City Department of Design & Construction released the High Performance Building Guidelines, an acclaimed handbook for constructing 'green' municipal buildings. In order to assist the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) with critical early implementation steps, the Design Trust, its fellows, and DDC agreed to continue the partnership established during the High Performance Building Guidelines project.

The successes of this project — and some failures — were documented in a companion implementation booklet, which describes a number of pilot projects, compiles comments from participating architects, and outlines challenges and goals facing further high-performance implementation.

This report, published three years after the original building guidelines, describes how the recommendations were put into practice on a number of demonstration projects, including the following:

  • Bronx Criminal Court Complex
  • Children's Intake Center
  • Kensington Branch Library
  • New York Hall of Science
  • Queens Botanical Garden
  • Seabury Day Care Center
